Lily O’Sullivan hails from the small town of Casuarina on the NSW North Coast. Moving from Tugun SLSC, to Cudgen Headland, and finally to Burleigh Heads/Mowbray Park, O’Sullivan has qualified for her second Nutri-Grain Series after an inspired performance in the 2022/23 Trial Round. O’Sullivan was also a standout star of the Australian Youth Life Saving Team during the 2022 World Lifesaving Championships in Riccione, Italy. During the Beach events, O’Sullivan notched an incredible seven gold medals for seven race starts.

Lily, how old were you when you started surf lifesaving and why?

I started as a green cap in under 6s at Tugun SLSC as both my parents did nippers when they were younger and they thought I would also have an interest in it.

Who was your hero growing up in and out of surf lifesaving?

Courtney Hancock, she comes from a small NSW town like me and I think her sacrifices and dedication to the sport is super inspiring.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?

Michael King – “Consistency is the key to success”

Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?

Consistency is the key to success. Although you may have to sacrifice a lot of social fun, it always pays off in the end.

What do you think about during a race?

What skills i need to do in the moment and try not to think too far ahead of myself.

Lily, what has been a high in your IronWoman journey?

High – Making the Nutri-Grain Series at 17 and now again at 18 through the Trials.

Low – Dislocating my knee eight times in 2019.

Do you have any race day superstitions?

I have a few:

  • Getting my nails done
  • Wearing club coloured ribbons in my hair
  • Chewing gum every training session and before I race, ALWAYS
Do you have a secret talent?

I can walk a long distance on my hands.
