Ironwoman Georgia Miller has claimed victory in round five of the Nutri-Grain IronWoman Series, beating Lana Rogers in a final head to head run up the beach.

Moving into the final Ironwoman race of the day, Miller and Rogers hadn’t won any of the individual races – instead adopting a calculated approach that saw them conserve energy for the last race.

There was nothing separating the pair, as they both jagged a wave into the shore of the final ski leg, Miller showing her experience picking the right line back to the beach to put her in the ideal spot to race to the finish line.

Miller said today’s Specialist format proved to be tougher than she initially thought.

“Everything just goes up another pace, because you are only doing the one individual leg. I think when you do an iron you get into a rhythm and can find your spot in the field,” Miller said.

“But with this – you’ve got no time to rest, the three minutes between each leg is nothing. I thought my day was over, she (Rogers) turned that last can and she kind of got this little run that I didn’t even see coming – she just took off.

“She was a long way to the south, so I just tried to pick my line and I just really had to grit my teeth that last 20 metres into the beach,” she said.

Miller says her partner Riley Fitzsimmons, Olympic canoe sprint athlete, is what got her over the line.

“He was on the beach screaming at me, and he’s such a great ski paddler himself so I was just trying to do whatever he told me to do,” Miller said.

“When you’ve got somewhere there that you love, that’s telling you what to do, it makes it a lot easier – I’m so lucky to have him handling for me,” she said.

Miller and Rogers finished ahead of Lizzie Wellborn who came into today second on the leaders ladder.

With the champion to be crowned tomorrow, the race is on with only nine points separating the top three females.

Northcliffe’s Harriet Brown suffered an injury to her lower right foot and ankle – she has been assessed by the medical team. After the injury she was stabilised, and left with family members to have scans and further assessment.
