Nathan Gray is a small town boy at heart, growing up in Lennox Head on the the NSW North Coast. He spent most of his childhood in the water, and thanks to fellow Nutri-Grain IronMan Tanyn Lyndon, was convinced to participate in surf sports when he was nine years old. Since then Gray has relocated to the Gold Coast and joined Surfer Paradise SLSC with a drive to race against the elites. In his spare time you’ll find him either training in the water or keeping it safe as a Lifeguard on the Gold Coast.

Nathan, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?

I started when I was 9 years old at Lennox Heads. I competed with Tanyn Lyndon in the pool who later convinced me to change from chlorine to saltwater.  I have never looked back.

Who was your hero growing up in and out of surf lifesaving?

Nathan Smith. I always watched Smithy mainly for his name when I was younger, however as I got older I began to admire the way he held and conducted himself. Professional, respectful and hardworking.

Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?

Enjoy it. Do not over think it.

What do you think about during a race?

Finishing the race and holding a brave face during transitions. Other than that it’s all a blur.

How do you relax away from competition?

Work, someone has to do it… However, I strive to make the most of my days off doing the things I love with the people I love.

Nathan, what has been a high and low in your IronMan journey?

High: Having the opportunity to place my foot on the start line for any Nutri-Grain Series race. It’s a feeling that will never get old and is always an exciting opportunity.

Low: Losing your ski and swimming back to the beach.

Do you have any pets?

A Groodle named Maple, apparently, we look the same.

Do you have any secret talents?

I always have a smile on.
