Sunshine Coast ironwoman Tiarnee Massie has claimed her maiden round win in today’s Shaw and Partners Iron Series round at Miami Beach on the Gold Coast.

It was an all Sunshine Coast affair on the women’s podium, with Dom Stitt (Mooloolaba) in second and Alexandra Headland’s Emma Woods in third.

Having finished on the podium several times before today, Massie couldn’t quite find the words to describe standing on top for the first time.

“It was pretty crazy, and very unexpected – I was just out there trying to do my job so I’m very proud,” Massie said.

“I’ve pictured this moment for a long time, and I’m just so proud and so grateful to my team and everyone who has supported me since I was four years old.

“I’ve seriously got the best team around me and I would never be able to get this win without them. I wouldn’t be half the woman I am without them, so this is for them and we’ve got one more to go tomorrow.

“Today was really about going through the process and making sure that I secure my spot for tomorrow – that’s the big goal,” she said.

In the men’s, it was Surfers Paradise teammates Finn Askew and Ali Day who finished first and second, with New Zealand ironman Joe Collins in third coming back after falling off his ski earlier in the day.

This season has been an unlucky one for Askew so far, but he was proud to return to the top step of the podium.

“Honestly, since the new year I haven’t had that much good luck in the surf, but I have awesome skills and today was just a wonderful day out there,” Askew said.

“I was just really enjoying myself and was really in flow with the ocean. Everything was on my side today and I’m just glad to come out with another win,” he said.

This weekend marks an emotional one, with Ali Day racing in his last Shaw and Partners Iron Series. To be able to share the podium with his team mate, is a moment Askew said he’ll remember for a long time.

“It was pretty surreal – we’ve gone around a few years now…I think this is our sixth year running around together,” Askew said.

“So it’s super special, and you’ve got to cherish every moment you can with him because there’s not too many of them left.

“To go out there, around the last board leg with him, was pretty bloody awesome and I’ll cherish that for a long time,” he said.

The top 12 athletes from today’s Super Sprint will move through to tomorrow’s Grand Eliminator – where the winner takes all.
