At only 18 years old, Byron Dieckmann has already represented Australia in both surf lifesaving and kayaking. This year at the ICF Junior World Championships, Dieckmann won the U18 K1 1000m. 2025 continues to be a big year for the Sunshine Coast local, as he now makes his Shaw and Partners Iron Series debut after claiming the red lycra from the Next Gen competition.
Byron, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
Started when I was 5 years old because I loved surf lifesaving.
Who was your hero growing up in surf lifesaving?
I looked up to Ali Day and Tanyn Lyndon.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
“Work bloody hard” – Georgia Fitzsimmons.
Your advice for aspiring Shaw and Partners Iron Series athletes?
Turn up to every training possible and seek advice and extras.
What do you think about on the starting line?
I think about my the entry into the water and watch the waves to time it.
Byron, what has been a high and low in your surf sports journey?
High: Winning the Shaw and Partners Next Gen, and making Queensland and Sunny Coast teams.
Low: Most of Aussies 2023 in Perth to be honest.
