Bio
A proud Kiwi Ironman, Max Beattie has represented the New Zealand Blackfins for more than a decade. In that time, he’s claimed three World Lifesaving titles been crowned New Zealand Ironman Champion four times and was named the World Ironman Champion in 2016. Beattie is no stranger to the Iron Series and will be looking to make a statement during his outing at the 2024/25 Shaw and Partners Iron Series. When not competing and training, the coffee addicted vegan is busy works as a brand manager, coaches at Surfers Paradise, and runs a clubbie podcast called Tent Talk.
Max, how old were you when you started surf lifesaving and why?
In the under 6’s because I grew up on the beach, and my parents wanted me to be safe around the water.
Who was your hero growing up in and out of surf lifesaving?
I had so many at different times in my life and different idols that affected me in different ways. But right now and for the last few years, training and racing alongside (and against) Ali Day, I’ve got a front row seat to one of the most amazing and committed athletes I’ve ever seen.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
“Be a nice person,” – Mum
Your advice for aspiring Shaw and Partners Athletes?
Enjoy it, and learn from it.
I’ve been doing this 10 years, and it’s gone really fast. Results are great, but the experiences are better.
What do you think about on the start line?
I’m trying to stay calm.
What do you think about during a race?
“Flow, breathe, rhythm.”
Max, what has been a high and low in your IronMan journey?
High: Racing for the NZ Blackfins. World Championships racing is my favourite.
Low: has been the last few years, I fell out of love with the sport and felt like giving up.
How do you relax away from competition?
Drink coffee, sleep in, play with my dog (cavoodle named Tommy).
