Bio
Pipi Te Pania started nippers in U9’s at Manly SLSC and originally didn’t love it, but at her first state titles she claimed a 2nd place in the board. Te Pania realised she wanted to be a professional Ironwoman in U13’s and made the move to Newport SLSC to develop her skills. A year later she made her professional debut at only 16 years old. Te Pania also had impressive finishes at the 2024 Aussies, claiming 2nd in both the U17 Female Board and U17 Female Iron.
Pipi, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
I was in U9’s when I first started surf life saving, I joined it because I loved to be at the beach with my friends even though I was never very good, but I still loved to be on the beach.
Who was your hero growing up in and out of surf lifesaving?
My first hero in surf life saving was probably Lizzie Welborn, and I think its pretty special that I am able to now train and race along side her.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
“Make them hurt.”
Your advice for aspiring Shaw and Partners Iron Athletes?
To stay focused on yourself and to be consistent with your training.
What do you think about during a race?
I tell myself I got this.
Pipi, what has been a high and low in your IronWoman journey?
A low of my Iron woman career would have to be finding out after Aussies 24/25 that I had fractured my lower back. I was unsure of my 25/26 season, but after extensive rehab and slow progress back into training, I was able to go back into competition. My first major carnival back was the Trial, presented by Race One Surf Craft, which ended up being the highlight of my career – after having such a tough off season I was able to secure my spot back into the Shaw and Partners Iron Series.
What is your favourite movie?
KPop Demon Hunters
Do you have any race superstitions?
I have the same breakfast.
