Bio
Hailing from the NSW Central Coast, Zach Morris grew up playing a variety of sports, including Rugby League and Australian Rules Football. At one point Morris was part of the Sydney Swans AFL Academy, yet he chose surf lifesaving as his main sport. Fast-forward to today, the young Iron athlete has notched four top-ten Iron Series finishes, as well as call ups to the Australian Life Saving Team at the 2023 International Surf Rescue Challenge and 2024 World Lifesaving Championships. Outside of sport, Morris is a fulltime electrician.
Zach, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
U6’s at Swansea Belmont SLSC, because my friends did it and we lived near the beach.
Who was your hero growing up in surf lifesaving?
The Eckstein brothers. I got a couple of photos with them when I was young and have looked up to them ever since.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
“Go out there and enjoy your racing,” my Mum and Dad.
Especially when things don’t go your way out in the ocean, you need to reset and remember why you do and love this sport.
Your advice for aspiring Shaw and Partners athletes?
Have fun and enjoy yourself in training and competition.
What do you think about during a race?
“Finish the race.”
Zach, what has been a high and low in your surf sports journey?
High: Representing Australia
Low: Not too many lows just yet – but the early morning starts are always tough, especially when you have to work all day and train after work.
Do you have a secret talent?
I’m really good at solving puzzles.
How do you relax away from competition?
I don’t have much spare time these days, but I do like to squeeze in some PlayStation and Netflix when I can.
