Bio
Ky Kinsela was born and raised in Coffs Harbour, NSW. Orginally a member of Sawtell SLSC, Kinsela joined Currumbin SLSC as he was the only senior male competing at Sawtell and wanted to participate in team events. Since then he has moved from strength to strength, having been selected as a member of the Australian Lifesaving Team, claiming two Australian Taplin Relay titles in 2018, and now earning a place in the 20/21 Nutri-Grain Series. KInsela is also an avid reader and is currently writing a novel.
Ky, how old were you when youstarted surf lifesaving and why?
7 years old. Having competed in pool swimming races and I loved being in the ocean, my parents thought I would enjoy nippers – I was actually disappointed that there was only a wading race and I couldn’t swim.
Who was your hero growing up in surf lifesaving?
No one person. I respect every athlete that races with sportsmanship.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
Relax.
Your advice for aspiring Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain athletes?
Don’t take each race too seriously, it’s just a race and there’s always next time.
What do you think about during a race?
I’m hoping that I jag a good wave.
Ky, what has been a high and low in your IronMan journey?
High: Being selected for Australia and qualifying for the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Series.
Low: Most recently at the Summer of Surf round at Wanda 2019/20 when I was leading into the final leg on the ski, then lost it and didn’t finish the race.
Do you have any pets?
I have a dog named Diamond.
Do you have a secret talent?
Writing. I’m attempting to write a novel at the moment.
