Bio

Gemma Smith-Welch started her surf life saving journey at Sunshine Beach SLSC in U12’s, and recently moved to BMD Northcliffe SLSC to follow her dream of becoming a professional Ironwoman. A gun Netball player who has played in State rep teams, Smith-Welch makes her Shaw and Iron Series debut after qualifying through the Trial, presented by Race One Surf Craft – a goal she has been working hard towards for past couple of years. Outside of training and racing, Smith-Welch is full-time university student, and loves to spend time with friends and family at the beach.

Gemma, how old were you when you started surf lifesaving and why?

11. Growing up in Noosa, the beach was such a big part of my lifestyle, so joining a surf club was the perfect way to spend even more time with my friends at the beach.

Who was your sports hero growing up in or out of surf lifesaving?

I was really into netball, so I always looked up to players like Gretel Tippett and Laura Geitz.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?

Consistency is key — keep showing up, putting in the work, and staying committed, even on the days you don’t feel like it.

Your advice for aspiring Shaw and Partners Iron Athletes?

Just make the most of every moment, enjoy the journey and surround yourself with people who motivate and support you.

Do you have any race day superstitions?

I love going through my stretching routine while listening to music. It helps me relax and take my mind off racing.

Gemma, what has been a high and low in your IronWoman journey?

High: Other than qualifying through the trial for the Shaw and Partners Iron Series this year, finishing top 8 in the 2025 Aussies Iron final.

Low: Missing out on making the Iron Series the past couple of years.

What do you think about during a race?

During a race, I focus on my effort and staying in the moment. I remind myself that the pain is only temporary and that crossing the finish line makes it all worthwhile. I always push myself so I know I gave everything I could — I don’t want to finish with any regrets.

Do you have a secret talent?

I’m pretty good at netball! I played for about 7 years and made it into the state team which I really enjoyed.
