Shaw and Partners Iron Series
Disciplines
Every Shaw and Partners Iron Series race features the same fundamental disciplines of Iron racing.
Swim
A crucial discipline – the Swim can make or break any Iron race.
Shaw and Partners Iron Athletes must swim around the first set of cans (the ones closest to shore), and back to the beach. Watch for the athletes to utilise their surf lifesaving training, and take advantage of any currents and breaking waves to give them an edge.
The Engine swim leg of the round is awarded to the Male and Female Iron athlete who demonstrates the most impressive display of surf swim ability that weekend.
Board
Ask the Shaw and Partners Iron Series athletes their favourite leg, and more often than not they will tell you it’s the Board.
Competitors race around the middle set of cans, and fight to catch a wave, into shore. Nail a good wave and it’s a chance for a breather on the way in.
The Bond University Board of the Round is awarded to the Male and Female Iron athletes who put on the most clinical display of board riding skills over the weekend.
Ski
The fastest discipline of Iron racing – the Ski.
A surf ski is designed for competitors to glide through the water, using foot pedals at the front of the craft to steer, and a paddle to build speed. Athletes must carry their giant craft from beach to water, before paddling around the last and furthest set of cans.
The Race One Surf Craft Paddle of the Round is awarded to the Male and Female athlete who showcases the most impressive ski across the weekend.
Run
Separating each of the disciplines is a Run transition.
The Shaw and Partners Iron Series athletes must run across the soft sand as fast as they can in order to gain an advantage.
Each race ends with a thrilling run up the beach, with our athletes leaving nothing in the tank to try and lock in their positions.
Our athletes run through the finish arch and competition area multiple times a race, so make sure you’re close to all the action and cheering loudly to help give them a boost as they run over the sand!
