Bio

Sienna Bush started Nippers at six years old at Currumbin SLSC, but it wasn’t until her early teens that she embraced the water events and began pursuing surf lifesaving more seriously. The 18-year-old comes from an accomplished running background, winning multiple national cross country titles and earning state and national medals across the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, and steeplechase, while also representing Australia at the U20 World Cross Country Championships at just 15. After a stress fracture sidelined her from running and surf competition for nine months, Bush returned to competition and has since earned four Australian junior team selections across running and surf lifesaving, with her endurance now one of her greatest strengths. Bush’s dream is to one day compete in the Shaw and Partners Iron Series alongside her younger sister, Savannah.

Sienna, which race format is your favourite?

I love the Super Sprint and the Eliminator. I love the back-to-back style races with minimal rest – it is definitely a good one for me because my endurance and backing up after races have always been my strengths.

What is the best part about being a surf sports athlete?

Anything can happen; you can never say never in surf. Because surf is unpredictable sometimes you do really well when you least expect it – and that’s the best feeling. I also really like the variance in training, it definitely keeps it interesting. Surf is also a very social sport, so training sessions sometimes feel like you are just catching up at the beach with all your friends.

What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?

“The body achieves what the mind believes” – you have to have confidence and back yourself otherwise how can you expect to actually make it happen?

What is your race day routine?

Fully pack the night before so I don’t forget anything or am stressed in the morning. I always wake up early and like to have a good breakfast, then get down to the beach early to see everyone and check out the surf. I always make sure I do a really good warm up – and all my usual running stretches and warm ups and a long run like I used to before a cross country race, it’s what my body is used to.
