Bio
Ryan Green started Nippers at six years old at Terrigal SLSC on the NSW Central Coast. A talented board paddler, Green won the U19 Australian Board Race in 2022 before representing Australia and claiming the U19 World Board Race title in Riccione, Italy, later that year. The 22-year-old currently resides on the Gold Coast and studys a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology. Green has a twin brother, who is older than him by 20mins, and in the 2023 the two traded blows in the Australian Board Race final. The older Green (Nicholas) got the chocolates that day, with Ryan finishing second.
Ryley, which race format is your favourite?
I’d probably say the Eliminator is my favourite format. There’s no real reason behind it — I just really enjoy the format. I like the intensity and the fact that you have to stay switched on and focused throughout the race.
What is the best thing about being a surf sports athlete?
The best part is getting to spend so much time at the beach and in the ocean while doing something I love. I feel pretty fortunate that I get to compete at a high level in a place where so many people come to relax and enjoy themselves. I also really enjoy the competitive side of surf sports and the opportunity to compete alongside and against some of the best athletes in the country and around the world.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
Work hard, stay consistent, and most importantly, love what you do. If you enjoy what you’re doing, it makes the hard work and challenges along the way so much more worthwhile.
What is your top Iron Series memory so far?
Racing as a junior in Newcastle as the curtain-raiser for the Iron Series is definitely one of my favourite memories. Being in the same arena as some of my idols and watching them compete was pretty special. It was awesome to be around athletes I had looked up to and be part of the Iron Series environment.
