Bio
Sunshine Coast local Zoe Woods grew up around surf lifesaving and was inspired to join the sport after watching her older sister, fellow Shaw and Partners Iron Athlete, Emma compete. After beginning her surf sports journey in the Under 14s, Woods has continued to develop into a talented athlete and now earns her place in the Shaw and Partners Iron Series. The 18-year-old is currently balancing Year 12 studies with the demands of training and competition, having previously competed in representative netball before committing her focus to surf lifesaving. Away from the beach, Woods enjoys staying active with friends and trying a range of sports, including tennis, spikeball, and pickleball.
Zoe, which race format is your favourite?
Specialist, because you have to stay consistent through the four individual legs and then put it all together in the final Iron. I like the challenge of having to be consistent across each leg, then finishing it off in the Iron.
What is the best part about being a surf sports athlete?
The best part is being part of such a supportive community, inspiring younger girls and encouraging them to get involved in the sport. I also love the friendships, travelling and competing, while learning important skills like surf safety and helping others in the water.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
The race isn’t over until it’s over. Keep your head straight, keep working hard and focus on the next race. My coaches tell me this every carnival.
What is your race day routine?
Nothing too extreme. I usually wake up, have some breakfast, spend some time talking with my family and then get ready for the carnival. I like to keep things pretty relaxed and just focus on enjoying the day.
